One-of-a-kind homes par for the course in Essex Court

Custom 2-story by Costello Builders makes the most of its scenic  Manheim Township location overlooking Bent Creek Country Club

There are many reasons Darlene and Andy Fenstermacher refer to the two-story home at 685 Fleetwood Drive, Lititz, as “the feel-good house.”
With a prime location in Manheim Township’s Essex Court development, the home features 12-foot ceilings and majestic full-length windows that offer a stunning view of the 18th hole at neighboring Bent Creek Country Club.
Inside, the custom home by Costello Builders is built for happy gatherings. A massive open floor plan joins the kitchen and nearby wet bar to a spacious family living area divided by a central see-through gas fireplace featuring floor-to-ceiling brick surround and wiring for TVs on both sides.
Despite its size, the home exudes warmth, thanks to features like solid wood doors and rough-sawn pine flooring that was stained on site.
The result is a nearly-4,600-square-foot home that impresses without overwhelming, say the Fenstermachers, of RE/MAX Associates of Lancaster, listing agents for the property.
“It’s a very livable house,” Andy says. “It’s not huge and formal. It’s very comfortable.”
Essex Court will include a total of 26 Costello homes when complete.
“Every home is a custom home. You don’t just choose a stock floor plan,” Darlene says.
Those who may be intimidated by starting their dream home completely from scratch need not worry. There are virtually an infinite number of floor plans available to use as a starting point.
And for those who want the custom home without the wait, the home at 685 Fleetwood Drive is move-in ready.
With its stone and fiber-cement siding exterior and variegated roof line, the home strikes an impressive presence on the outside.
The sheer height of the ceilings makes every detail more impressive on the inside, from the sliding barn door leading to a flex room off the foyer to the crown molding detail throughout.
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and its extra-long island with bar seating makes it an extension of the living area, where a bump-out with a wall of windows creates the perfect spot for a large farmhouse table.
Kitchen features include a walk-in pantry and pocket office, stainless steel appliances (including a double oven), and a counter and sink strategically placed at a large picture window facing the back of the home. One might even look forward to washing dishes by hand, simply to enjoy the view.
“They designed the house with light in mind,” says Andy, noting the careful placement of large windows to allow plenty of natural light at any time of day.
Dual sliding glass doors off the family room serve that purpose well, while leading to a covered stamped-concrete porch and adjacent open patio.
The aforementioned flex room can be used for multiple purposes, but it is designed as a theater room with prewiring for sound and projection.
The first floor also includes a mudroom with built-in bench, hooks and cubbies, and a powder room featuring Italian ceramic tile.
Upstairs, the massive master suite features a tray ceiling and the same pine flooring as the first floor. French doors lead to a bright private bath with a stylish freestanding tub and vanities, private water closet, and walk-in shower with wood-look tile. The suite also includes a spacious walk-in closet.
Four additional bedrooms each have walk-in closets. Two have ensuite baths, and two share a Jack-and-Jill bath. All baths have tile showers.
A convenient second-floor laundry includes built-in cabinetry with granite countertops.
A finished basement provides an additional 1,000 square feet of living space, an additional full bath and plenty of flexible storage areas. Like the rest of the home, the basement is also bright, thanks to a set of three oversized egress windows and a stone retaining wall set back far enough to allow for abundant natural light.
The home also has an oversized four-car garage.
